Simple Minds, Devo, The Church - Sydney Entertainment Centre Friday 7th December 2012

They defined a generation, are revered by critics and adored by fans. In an epic career spanning 30 years and more than 60 million albums sold, Simple Minds travelled from the streets of Glasgow to become one of the world’s biggest bands with a musical majesty that still inspires awe.

Devo’s pioneering sound, style and philosophy had a profound effect on the new wave movement. Influential, subversive and downright entertaining, Devo’s cult status quickly spread to the mainstream.

In what promises to be one of the most captivating tours of the year, Simple Minds and Devo will perform indoor shows and the popular a day on the green winery series later this year.

Joining them, and adding another highlight to savour, will be one of Australia’s finest, the church. Simple Minds, Devo and the church all in one night – now that’s what we call a concert not to be missed!

The tour is the first announcement for the next a day on the green summer season, the event’s 12th year. Eclectic 80s popsters Models, led by Sean Kelly, will open all a day on the green shows.

Simple Minds has had a lengthy love affair with Australia since tasting success here for the first time anywhere in the world with their first hit single ‘Love Song’ and first Gold album ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’. A stellar array of hits followed like ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’, ‘Alive and Kicking’, ‘Love Song’, ‘Promised You A Miracle’, ‘Glittering Prize’ and ‘Waterfront’ spanning eight Top 20 albums.
Lead vocalist Jim Kerr says: “Australia holds a very special place in the heart of Simple Minds. It was the first country anywhere in the world to embrace our music and we have wonderful memories of the tours we’ve done. We’re extremely excited about playing in Australia again.”

In the live concert arena, Simple Minds have few peers. This is a band that has played countless sold out stadium tours including three times at Wembley stadium, has been voted the prestigious Q Magazine’s ‘World’s Best Live Act’ and has retained an enviable reputation as one of THE great live concert bands.

Simple Minds commence a lengthy European tour in late June in support of their just released box set “Simple MindsX5” which features their ground-breaking first five albums ‘Life in a Day’, ‘Real to Real Cacophony’, ‘Empires and Dance’, ‘Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call’ and ‘New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)’ as well as a bonus disc of rare and previously unavailable B-sides and remixes.
According to the UK Guardian Newspaper “Simple Minds are suddenly alive and kicking again” whilst the Metro says: “It’s official, Simple Minds are cool again.”

There’s no denying the influence Devo – brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald and Bob Casale - have exercised over a new generation of artists. Invitations to play the Livid Festival (1997) and Splendour In The Grass (2008) on past Australian sojourns is testimony to their currency with music fans.

Devo was an extension of a multi-media exploration of the concept that mankind's progress had ceased, and the process of de-evolution had begun. Their early work from the visionary debut ‘Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo’ caught the attention of such icons as Brian Eno and David Bowie, and with hits like ‘Whip It’ and ‘Girl U Want’ and the accompanying revolutionary music videos, the group became one of the defining acts of the 1980s.

Devo’s surrealist and highly innovative stage shows have been an influence on artists from Rage Against the Machine to Lady Gaga. Kurt Cobain once said, "Of all the bands who came from the underground and actually made it in the mainstream, Devo is the most challenging and subversive of all."

In 2010 Devo released their first album in 20 years ‘Something For Everyone’ and have re-ignited their passion for live performance They are about to tour the US with Blondie so will be in fine form when they hit Australian shores again. DEVOtees..... expect the unexpected!
Having recently celebrated their 30th anniversary, the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise.

From the debut album ‘Of Skins and Heart’ through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece ‘Untitled #23’, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), continue to pleasure their fans with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics.

Models induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame was recognition of the status this pioneering Melbourne band has always held. Led by Sean Kelly and James Freud and emerging from the post new wave scene, Models’ produced ground-breaking albums ‘The Pleasure Of Your Company’ and ‘Out Of Mind Out Of Sight’. Kelly has continued to work as a producer and performer with his solo combo and leading various Models reunions.

Palace a Home for Rock Rulers

A Sydney pub is fighting to save live music in tile CBD as an ever-increasing number of festivals are pulling punters out of traditional band venues.

There was a time when every Friday and Saturday night crowds would pack venues to watch local bands play their hearts out.

However, according to the general manager of Haymarket's Palace Hotel, Marcus Van Vogt, that time of rock 'n' roll in the city is over and without public support it will die out completely.

In an effort to bring mainstream live music back to the CBD. Mr Van Vogt oversees The Square, a live-music performance space with the capacity to cater for approximately 200 people.

"The problem is I don't think there are a lot of venues that are doing proper live music anymore," Mr Van Vogt said.

“There are a few live-music joints in the city but most of them aren't doing so well and I think live music gigs could disappear from the city if effort is not made to boost their appeal.  I think the emergence of these big festivals really hurts the smaller bands because a lot of people save all their money up for them and don’t come out during the year to see the great local talent we have in the city.”

Mr Van Vogt said effort was being made to try and entice more patrons to the venue while live bands were playing. "It is really important for musicians to have an audience there to hear them play,"

There is some other rear-guard action occurring. Newtown's Sandringham Hotel was recently sold to new owners who intend to run it as a live-music venue. The move followed a Save the Sando demonstration in the city on September 18, led by former Angels frontman Doc Neeson.

The City of Sydney recently announced a Live Music task force that will work with venue operators to negotiate the approvals process manage the impact of noise and support groups to stage live events in unused spaces.

Radiohead Concert 12-13th November at the Sydney Entertainment centre

Admirers of seminal alternative rock and genre-bending music take notice. It has been nearly a decade since Radiohead, the Oxford bred five-piece, last graced Australian shores in 2004. It is safe to say that their welcome return is certain to be the live music milestone of the year.

Murmurs of a return to our corner of the globe have been rife for years now, even more so in this era of social media with nothing remaining secret for long. Radiohead however, manage to defy this with their celebrated return being one of the biggest and best kept secrets this year; something to be expected from a band shrouded in mystery, everything they do an enigma.

Radiohead will perform two shows at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th November. For a band that is headlining major festivals across the globe, these Australian shows in relatively intimate settings are a clear indicator of a band that does things their own way.

With a long-standing reputation steeped in genre-redefining motions throughout their more than 20 year career, Radiohead have proved themselves to be one of the most influential bands of our generation, forever appealing to the public appetite with their ever evolving cut-and-paste sonic collages. From the band’s earlier style of melodic rock songs accompanied by dense riffs and ethereal atmospheres, through to their later experimentation with song structures, incorporating ambient, avant-garde and electronic influences.

Radiohead’s return to Australia will showcase the band’s multi-decade career in an aural and visual celebration. As a live band they transform their creations into an experience both towering and incandescent. Be sure to be part of the journey. No shows will be added to the tour – do not miss out.

Shows Australia: Slash "Apocalyptic Love" - Sydney Entertainment Centre

Recent Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee and one of the greatest exponents of the electric guitar, SLASH, returns this August for an unmissable tour in support of his new album ‘Apocalyptic Love’.   On his last visit SLASH sold out all of his Australian shows in under 10 minutes. Those shows were moved up to much larger venues and promptly sold out again.

So this time around, he will come not only armed with the most gifted rock vocalist of this generation, Mr. Myles Kennedy and the band of Conspirators, but with an arena production to deliver his fabled show; just as the rock gods intended.

SLASH & Co are set to perform an all killer career spanning set from early Guns to Velvet Revolver and 2 amazing solo albums, the latest of which, Apocalyptic Love, has garnered praise from fan forums to broadsheet newspapers and all points in between.

“Like some kind of rock 'n' roll kaleidoscope, the album evinces the legendary guitarist at his best from all angles. There are soft and subdued moments. There's danger. There's mayhem. There's blues. There's shred.” – Artistdirect

"Like the new album, and the debut before it, the perfect rock marriage of Gibson and Marshall comes to life in SLASH’s live show.  “In front of a wall of Marshall amps Slash in top hat, leather pants and sleeveless shirt played his guitar like a man possessed racing from one side of the stage to the other” Triple M

Metro Hotels Appoints Business Development Manager – MICE

Metro Hotels has appointed Mr. Div Grover to the role of Business Development Manager – MICE for Metro Hospitality Group in Australia.

In this newly created role, Mr. Grover is responsible for building and maintaining the small meetings, incentives, conferences and events business for Metro Hospitality Group’s network of properties Australia-wide.

The position reports to Metro Hotel’s National Sales and Marketing Manager Gary Long, who today welcomed Mr Grover’s appointment.

“Div brings to this role significant experience in the hospitality industry gained over the past 9 years, Mr Long said.

“While many hotels only cater for large events, it is often difficult to find venues for small meetings and seminars.  Metro Hotels is increasing its focus on the small meetings and functions market.

We see Div’s strong background in building and maintaining business relationships as instrumental in developing this niche market to drive business and further enhance the reputation and patronage of Metro Hotel’s network of properties,” he said.
